Are mittens warmer than gloves?
Is one actually better than the other?
Can we be stylish and sensible at the same time?
Gloves are more elegant. They’re more sophisticated, refined, dignified, and all those other words that mean elegant.
But if you’re going to spend some time outside and you know it’s going to be cold, then I strongly suggest mittens.
Why? Because mittens allow your hands to warm up a larger volume of air and it’s actually the air around your fingers that keeps you warm. The only finger that gets cold is your thumb because it doesn’t have a partner to snuggle with.
Mittens as Opposed to Gloves - Beauty is pain
My daughters’ favourite sentence when it comes to fashion.
Gloves are designed to be tight-fitting to make them stylish. Meaning, there is no room for that extra volume of air.
So. Are you looking for graceful? Or are you looking for sensible? Or maybe both? Because sensible can also be neat, chic and classy.
I like to think that the mittens I make fall into that last category. They’re by no means elegant. But they’re different. I make them from upcycled leather jackets so I can only make one pair of each kind. And they’re lined with cashmere sweaters that are also upcycled, making them super soft.
A Clear Conscience
I upcycle simply because it makes me feel better. I could buy new raw-material from the store. It would take me so much less time to prepare my designs. But then I would have a very, very poor conscience.
The mittens come in four ladies’ sizes and four men’s sizes. A few are for sale here.
